The Strand Arcade

Project Brief

  • Laser Scan and output of accurate as-existing 2D CAD drawings and 3D BIM (Revit) model.

Heritage Values & Background

  • Date of Construction: 1900, rebuilt in 1909-1910.
  • The Strand Arcade is a notable building on Queen Street, Auckland.  It occupies a single lot spanning between Queen Street and Elliott Street, with arcade entrances and shopfronts addressing both streets.  The original configuration drew pedestrians off the main thoroughfare to an impressive internal atrium, rising twenty-four metres and naturally lit by a contiguous glazed roof lantern.
  • Designed by Arthur P Wilson, the Strand Arcade is a rare surviving example of a nineteenth-century arcade typology in New Zealand and utilised modern construction methods of the time (particularly in its 1909 post-fire reconstruction).
  • The historic heritage significance is primarily related to its aesthetic, architectural, knowledge, contextual, and social values.

Heritage Recognition

  • Auckland Council: Category A scheduled historic heritage place (ID: 02038).
  • HNZPT: Category 1 Historic Place (List No. 123).
