Heritage Values & Background

  • Date of Construction: 1875-1877.
  • From its construction in 1877 until 1902, when reticulation began from the Waitakere Ranges, water pumped by the stream-driven beam engine housed in the building provided the public supply for Auckland city and several adjacent local authorities.
  • The Pumphouse is a one- and two-storey brick masonry structure (with a partial basement).  The timber-framed roof structure is clad in slate tiles.  The building forms a central part of MOTAT’s exhibitions, demonstrating the pumphouse beam engine mechanism, boiler, and other pump machinery.
  • The Pumphouse has outstanding significance for its historical, social, knowledge, technology, architectural, aesthetic, and contextual values.

Heritage Recognition

  • Auckland Council: Category A scheduled historic heritage place (ID: 01678).
  • HNZPT: Category 1 Historic Place (List No. 114).
