The character of Akaroa is based on its history, two town centres, the retention of a large number of historic colonial buildings and its harbour and landscape setting.
The building typologies evident in Akaroa today are not limited to those recognised surviving historic models or to original patterns of settlement. Rather they exhibit an evolution in the range of built forms and typologies to be found in Akaroa that have arisen from an interest and expectation in the growing township.
Archifact – architecture & conservation limited collaborated with Boffa Miskell to undertake a project commissioned by Christchurch City Council to produce a design guide with the aim of balancing developing needs with retaining the special character of Akaroa.
