Heritage Values & Background

  • Date of Construction: 1925-1926.
  • Administrator House (former Alliance Insurance Co. building) in Auckland Central, was commissioned by the Alliance Assurance Company Ltd, an insurance company.
  • The architects were Rough and Hooper and the contractors were Fletcher Construction.  Rough and Hooper were only briefly in partnership, with Basil Hooper better known for his Arts and Crafts residences in Dunedin and Auckland.
  • The neo-classical style of the building and the materials used represented the strength and solidity of Alliance Assurance: the imposing front elevation has giant-order Ionic columns with decorative volutes, a cornice and parapet.  The building was constructed of Ōamaru stone, with grey Nelson marble at the base.  Grey marble was also used in the entrance vestibule and the main staircase.  The interior has extensive decorative plaster work.
  • The name Administrator House likely dates from when it was occupied by the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (an organisation now known in New Zealand as Governance New Zealand) from 1979 to 1988.

Heritage Recognition

  • Auckland Council: Category A scheduled historic heritage place (ID: 01988).
