pumphouse

The original 1905 pump house is located at Killarney Park, Takapuna. It addresses Lake Pupuke and once drew water supply from the lake. The pump house is of brick construction and was designed by Mr H. Metcalfe, a Devonport Borough engineer.

By 1941 Lake Pupuke was unable to continue as a water supply. The pump house was soon abandoned and its machinery removed to the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT). In the 1960’s and 70’s, it was proposed that the building to be adapted as a public amenity and the pump house was eventually converted to a theatre. The adjacent Green shed that previously housed electrical engines became a café facility.

The pump house and its precinct is a well known and distinctive landmark, in particular its 80ft high chimney. Its significance is predominantly derived from its exceptional historical significance, but also from its considerable significance in aesthetic, social, townscape, and potential archaeological values.

A conservation plan has been prepared to provide information for the conservation of the pump house and its precinct in light of possible future development opportunities. It has also identified a number of areas where urgent work is required.
