dilworth building

Dilworth Building occupies a prominent corner site in central Auckland and it dates back to the 1920’s. A mirror structure was intended to be constructed on the opposite site forming a gateway to the city and the concept was titled ‘Urbis Porta’.

Originally designed by well known local architectural practice Gummer and Ford, this NZHPT registered Category I Historic Place has been given an interior upgrade.

The extent of work included the whole of the third floor, with emphasis on returning the common lobby to its former glory by reconstructing the marble elevator surrounds and revealing authentic masonry ceiling coffers.

The work included adapting Gummer and Ford’s original colour scheme in the wet areas with marble feature pieces that tie to the lobby to achieve continuity in these separated spaces. Lighting design was modelled and evaluated for performance and efficiency prior to work implementation and it greatly enhances the overall design scheme.

The designed work has been documented in drawings, specifications and reviewed and approved by the heritage department of Auckland City Council and NZHPT.
