about the collection

Archifact welomes you to this virtual exhibition

This special collection of photographs has been a mystery to its owner and its caretakers for quite some time.

When Archifact took care of the collection in September 2004 their history looked nothing more than a blank page.  Since then through research at Archifact, the Special Collections of the Auckland Central Library and the help of the large number of interested people that visited Archifact's exhibition, it was possible to shed some light on the who, what, where and when of these excellent images. The following provides a short summary of the findings to date:

  • who:   photographer is  Harry Edwin Ockenden
  • what:  houses, landscapes, people, shops and modes of transport
  • where:   Auckland area, ca. 10% of the exact house locations are now identified
  • when:   taken between 1900 and 1910
  • how:  large format photography on glass plates (size: half plate)
  • owner:  private ownership
  • caretaker:  Archifact Limited with Susan Yoffee
